Body Piercing Saved My Life...



I currently have a 2-gauge captive-ball earring and a 0-gauge tunnel in my left ear, a barbell through my tongue, a labret sticking though my soul patch, a tattoo on my left arm declaring Jesus is Lord (Philippians 2:5-11), a crown of thorns with bloody nails on my right forearm with the Greek for "Greater love has no one than this..." (John 15:13), a portrait of Jesus on my right arm and the Hebrew Sh'ma (Deuteronomy 6:4) on my right hand. My piercings are nothing compared to what Jesus endured to save my life. The skin on His head was ripped by a crown of thorns; driven deep into His scalp again and again with a rod. His back was scarified by a whip fitted with pieces of metal and glass, tearing off chunks of skin and muscle-tissue with every stroke. His hands and feet were punctured and pierced with long, iron nails pounded straight through His flesh into a heavy wooden cross.

Jesus was pierced for my sake, and His piercing saved my life. As was prophesied 700 years before He was even born:

Surely He took up our infirmities

and carried our sorrows,

yet we considered Him stricken by God,

smitten by Him, and afflicted.

But He was pierced for our transgressions,

He was crushed for our iniquities;

the punishment that brought us peace was upon Him,

and by His wounds we are healed.

Isaiah 53:4-5

About 1000 years before Jesus was born, King David wrote these words about His passion:

Dogs have surrounded Me;

a band of evil men has encircled Me,

they have pierced My hands and My feet.

I can count all my bones;

people stare and gloat over Me.

They divide My garments among them

and cast lots for My clothing.

Psalm 22:16-18

For God so loved the world that He sent His only begotten Son... John 3:16
And about 500 years before Christ was born, Zechariah prophesied these words about the Messiah: They will look on Me, the one they have pierced, and they will mourn for Him as one mourns for an only child, and grieve bitterly for Him as one grieves for a firstborn son. Zechariah 12:10

"Behold the Lamb of God, Who takes away the sins of the world!" John 1:29

Christ willingly allowed His body to be pierced because it was the only way our sins could be forgiven. The punishment we deserve for our sins would have killed us --- not redeemed us. But Scripture tells us that Christ who was sinless became our sin (2 Corinthians 5:21) so that in dying on the cross He died our death. Our sin-debt has been declared "Paid in Full". We are saved by God's grace --- it is a gift and all we have to do is receive it. Our salvation is free but not cheap; it was very costly. The disciple Peter wrote:

"For you know that it was not with perishable things such as silver or gold that you were redeemed from the empty way of life handed down to you from your forefathers, but with the precious blood of Christ, a lamb without blemish or defect." 1 Peter 1:18-19

So you see, body piercing really did save my life; but Jesus wasn't pierced for me alone: He was pierced for you, too. He was pierced for all who will receive His gift of forgiveness and eternal life. I can't save myself, no matter how hard I try; and neither can you.
